Storyworthy

Key Ideas:

Homework for life – At the end of every day, ask yourself “what was the most storyworthy moment of my day?” and write a few words about it.
Stories are about the “5 second moment” where you realise something/change your mind. everything else should serve that moment, and if it doesn’t, take it out of the story.
Your story must reflect change over time (usually from the you/main character).

Other interesting notes:

No one wants to hear about your vacation. No one wants to hear drinking stories.
Don’t start by setting expectations (e.g.“this is hilarious,” or “you need to hear this,” or “you’re not going to believe this.”)
The goal of storytelling is about bridging the gap between you and another person by creating a space of authenticity, vulnerability and universal truth.
Stop your story early. Leave the audience with something to think about.
To brainstorm stories, mix 1 of “first, last, best, worst” with 1 of “kiss, car, trouble, injury, gift, travel, etc.”
Always start and end strong.

Thoughts on the book:

*Some great ideas but the book is too long with too many stories. I guess this is ok for a book on stories, but I’m not a fan 🙂
