Rework

by Jason Friend and David Heinmeier Hansson

8/10

Key Ideas:

Build a company that makes money, not a startup that loses it.
Stay as small, agile, and lean as possible. You can better solve problems this way.
Make products so good that customers come back asking for more.

Other interesting notes:

Growing your company is dumb. Try to reach the correct size instead.
Workaholism is dumb. It creates more problems than it solves. Workaholics don’t accomplish more.
Make a dent in the universe: do something that matters. The best way to do that is to make something you want to use.
Start making something. The only thing that matters is what you do, not what you say, plan or think.
Embrace constraints. Limited resources force you to make do with what you got. There’s no room for waste, which forces you to be creative.
There are things you can do, things you want to do, and things you must do. What you must do is where you should start.
Focus on the basics first, and then worry about the details. The big picture is all you need to worry about before you start.
Interruption is the enemy of productivity: isolate yourself to get sh*t done.
Meetings are toxic.
Teach others, and you’ll have fans quickly.
Hire great writers.
Build a rockstar environment (trust, autonomy, responsibility).

Thoughts on the book:

Short chapters, easy to read. Great ideas to solve corporate & start-up problems. Inspired by Maverick, but more realistic. Still, obviously easier to implement in a tech company with a great tech product that doesn’t need the network effect.
