It doesn’t have to be crazy at work

by Jason Friend and David Heinmeier Hansson

Key Ideas:

How difficult is it for employees to “use” your company? where is it slow? what bugs do you need to fix?
Great work demands uninterrupted time.
Model the behaviors you want your organization to embody.

Other interesting notes:

It seems like all of a sudden working 70 hours a week is a badge of honor instead of a sign of insanity.
Not only that, but companies are starting to call themselves your family, whatever that means.
When people focus on productivity, they end up focusing on being busy.
We believe in effectiveness. How little can we do? How much can we cut out?
You can get more out of the workday if you don’t waste so much time in unimportant meetings and other time sinkholes.
Doing nothing is always an option, and should always be on the table.
Continued sleep deprivation batters your IQ and saps your creativity.
The quickest way to disappointment is to set unreasonable expectations.
Instead of holding regular meetings, each person posts what they worked on that day.
There’s a written record of where projects are at, and managers can quickly see what their team is working on.
Instead of defaulting to a chat message, ask yourself if you need to bother someone. And if you do send a message, don’t expect an immediate response.
Following group chat is like being in an all-day meeting with no agenda.
Meetings should be a last resort.
Trust is a battery. When you hire someone, the battery starts at 50%. Every time you work with them, it either gets charged or loses charge.
Companies are culturally and structurally encouraged to get bigger and bigger.
It doesn’t matter how great is your resume if you are a jerk and people can’t stand you.
Continually tweak the company – don’t be married to one thing, especially if at any time it stops working for you.

Thoughts on the book:

Short chapters, easy to read. Great ideas to solve corporate & start-up life problems. Sequel to Rework.
